Shutter Island

Shutter Island is a physiological thriller starring Leonardo Di Caprio as Teddy Daniels, a U.S.marshal, who is assigned to find a patient that has escaped from the remote shutter island, a mental institute for only the worst patients.

The movie opens from a blank screen, to a boat slowly emerging from the mist, whilst Daniels is stood on the boat his character is portrayed very differently to the character in the flashbacks. We are made to think this because of the difference in lighting which changes the mise-en-scene, on the boat the music was non diegetic giving the audience an eerie sense of feeling, and the look over the sea shows the unknown which adds mystery. Daniels is also looking at himself in a mirror, talking to himself, reflecting on his inner self giving us the feeling there is more than meets the eye. I also feel that Daniels was seen to be a lot happier in the flashback, making us feel something has happened during the time gap. We go on to realise that his wife has died giving us understanding of how Daniels has changed.
Once we are close to shore the captain informs Daniels that the boat will be leaving immediately, so Daniels is stuck whether he likes It or not.
